Plan ahead now for next season’s holiday shopping

Who among us didn’t make at least a couple of holiday spending and shopping mistakes? Whether it’s forgetting what you already bought — and buying more — being generous beyond your means or paying more than you would have if you did a little research, we all screw up sometimes.
Learning from those mistakes is what’s most important in the new year. It might feel too depressingly soon to start thinking about the holidays again, but planning now can keep credit card debt down and overspending in check.
Key to not repeating errors is understanding why you made them in the first place. David Forbes, a clinical psychologist who consults for retailers, defines overspending as “spending that, in reflection, seems impulsive or unreasonable.”
