Red flags when selling a car online

Kathleen Harris of Renton [WA] knew the minute she got the e-mail that it was a scam. She recently advertised her used 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck online and got an e-mail from a potential buyer with a suspicious offer.

The e-mailer, a guy named Victor, told Harris that he liked the truck and would send her a cashier’s check for $16,900—or $7,100 more than her asking price. Victor wanted Harris to cash the check and send the difference back to him by international MoneyGram. His client was in Belgium on a business trip, he wrote, and preferred the MoneyGram.

Harris didn’t buy it, but she wanted to know what she could do to stop such scams.
